Food from the Bar 2010 - April 19 - May 14, 2010 - The Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association invites the legal community to join the effort of fighting hunger in the Greater Birmingham area.  Many children in the Birmingham area face hunger when summer vacation begins.  When schools close for the summer, thousands of children are not able to access school breakfast and lunch programs, a critical source of nutrition.  With the economic recession, more local families are faced with the choice of paying the rent or buying food for their children.  Food from the Bar makes a difference!  2010 marks the second year that the Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association and the legal community in concert with Magic City Harvest will participate in Food from the Bar, a program that has proven successful in other areas to replenish food bank supplies to meet families’ increased need for food during the summer months. The 2009 campaign was very successful and we expect even greater success this year.  Food from the Bar is a three week effort among law firms and legal offices in which participants will contribute money, donate food and/or volunteer time at the Magic City Harvest Foodbank.  We invite the legal community to mobilize as a whole to help alleviate hunger in Birmingham.  Magic City Harvest Foodbank, along with the Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association, and numerous law firms invite you to join their attorneys and staff in supporting this novel and important community project.  Foods needed are non-perishable items such as:  Canned goods with protein; Peanut Butter; Canned Meat and Fish; Cereal, Pasta and Rice; Soups; Canned Juice; Powered Lemonade & Milk; Spaghetti Sauce; Cornbread & Biscuit Mix.  It is very helpful to the foodbank to have several of one item.  Please check the expiration date of the food.  Monetary Donations can be mailed to: Magic City Harvest, P. O. Box 11292, Birmingham 35202 or deliver to contact person at one of the collection points.  The donations are tax deductible.  Collection Points are:  Birmingham Bar Association; Law Office of Gene Sellers; Bradley Arant Boult Cummings; Southern Company and Burr & Forman.

Holy Family Cristo Rey Internship Program

As an attorney, you are familiar with the numerous injustices that occur throughout our society.  Access to quality education is one of them.  Many parents of modest means cannot afford to send their children to private schools that will prepare them for college and careers as professionals.  Holy Family Cristo Rey High School provides a college prep curriculum and real-life work experience exclusively to Birmingham students from low income families.  Cristo Rey students work at paid corporate internships to help pay for their own tuition.  Working in teams of four, Cristo Rey students share entry level positions at local businesses during the school year.  Proceeds pay 70 percent of tuition costs for a college preparatory education. You can help transform student lives and influence tomorrow’s work force by becoming a Corporate Internship Sponsor.  For more information on how to make a difference in the life of a hard working young scholar, contact Steve Burbank at 205.263.0151.

Voices Against Violence Campaign Seeks Volunteers for its Final Year

Voices Against Violence is an initiative led by Birmingham women attorneys to raise funds and issue grants aimed at reducing domestic violence and holding perpetrators accountable through the legal system.  Established under the auspices of The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham as a five year program, the initiative is entering  its final year of fund raising.   The Steering Committee is seeking volunteers willing to raise funds within their own law firms and businesses, or to assist with solicitations at other firms and businesses.   Anyone willing to participate in the campaign is invited to attend a breakfast meeting Wednesday, March 24, 7:45am – 9am, at Park Lane, 2117 Cahaba Road, to learn how you can help.  The meeting will discuss plans for this year’s campaign and explain how  raised have been used in our law enforcement and court systems to assist victims of domestic violence, to assist our judges and their staffs,  and to ensure that perpetrators comply with court orders.  If you plan to attend the March 24 meeting, please rsvp to Wanda Couts at wcouts@foundationbirmingham.org   and furnish your full contact information.  How are funds raised by Voices Against Violence used?  Funds raised in the past four years have helped build a system to address domestic violence in our community. The Birmingham Municipal Court now has a dedicated docket for domestic violence cases, with increased security and special services furnished during the docket days.  A court advocate from the YWCA, funded by Voices Against Violence, works with victims. Voices Against Violence has funded the Jefferson County Family Violence Coordinated Community Response, an interagency collaboration that coordinates programs dealing with victim safety and offender accountability in local courts and agencies. Now that these programs are in place and the five year fundraising campaign is nearing the end,  the Steering Committee has adopted an ambitious goal of raising $100,000, hopefully enough to permit the programs to be sustained in the future through other organizations.   The Women’s Section of the Birmingham Bar has supported the campaign through contributions of our members.  If you are willing to help in any way, please contact Madeline Haikala, mhaikala@lightfootlaw.com or Wanda Couts, wcouts@foundationbirmingham.org.  Submitted by Linda Friedman.

Lamb Chops with Basil Pesto

Valentino Marcattili’s cookbook “Il San Domenico di Imola - Estetica del cibo, le cantine, i sapori della tavola” Parma, Italy.

INGREDIENTS

- 3 pounds lamb loin

- 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves

- 1/4 cup pine nuts

- 2 garlic cloves, chopped

- 2/3 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil

- 1/2 cup freshly grated Pecorino Gran Cru

- Natural Sea Salt with Black Olives, to taste

- freshly ground Pepper, to taste

- 8-years Balsamic Must of Modena, if desired

PREPARATION

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Clean the lamb loin and slice it into chops. Combine the basil, pine nuts, and garlic in a food processor and pulse until the mixture is coarsely chopped. Add the extra virgin olive oil and process until fully mixed and smooth.  Transfer the pesto to a large mixing bowl and season with Natural Sea Salt with Black Olives and freshly ground pepper and stir in the freshly grated Pecorino Gran Cru.  Sprinkle the Lamb chops with Natural Sea Salt with Black Olives and freshly ground pepper.  In a large grill pan, heat 2 tablespoons of Academia Barilla recipesextra virgin olive oil over high heat and place the chops in the skillet and cook just until brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.  Transfer the Lamb chops to a large baking sheet. Roast the lamb in the oven for about 15 - 25 minutes or until they are cooked to the desired doneness. When done, pull the Lamb chops out and let them rest for about 5 minutes. Spread the pesto mixture over 1 side of each chop so that it is covered in a thin pesto layer.  Transfer the Lamb chops to a large serving platter and arrange the Lamb chops with the pesto side up.

CHEF TIPS

If desired, sprinkle with a little extra freshly grated Pecorino Gran Cru and with Balsamic Must vinegar for an intense and sweet finish.  (serves 6)

LAMB WITH ARTICHOKES AND HERBS

Chef Matteo Carboni has put together a festive springtime recipe that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser and an instructional video.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL2iGU-jQIc

INGREDIENTS
Serves 4 to 6

· 2.2 lbs of Lamb loin

· 6 artichoke hearts

· 1 clove of garlic, chopped

· 1 bunch of mint leaves, chopped

· Extra Virgin Olive Oil

· 4 oz. of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

· Sapori Italiani, to taste

· salt and pepper, to taste

To begin, we suggest you take special care in selecting your ingredients. Italian cooking is all about bringing out the natural flavors in foods. Traditionally, fresh lamb is a springtime food and, depending on where you live, you should be able to find it at your local farmer’s market. While you are at the market, don’t forget to pick up artichokes, garlic and mint! The rest of the ingredients called for in the recipe are available at our online store.

http://www.italian-food-lovers.com/uploads/01-step-rack-of-lamb.jpg

Before you start cooking, we suggest that you watch chef Matteo’s video at least once. He provides helpful hints along the way allowing you to work through the recipe smoothly.  While the lamb is marinating, Matteo suggests that you trim and slice the artichokes. By placing them in cold water with lemon juice, you will be able to keep them from discoloring. Another important tip is to hold onto the lamb trimmings in step 1 of the recipe. They will be used to make the base for the mouth-watering balsamic vinegar sauce. The sweet flavor of the sauce pairs perfectly with the savory flavor of the meat.

http://www.italian-food-lovers.com/uploads/02-step-rack-of-lamb.jpg

And be sure to pay attention to how Matteo plates this dish, beginning with the sautéed artichokes, then layering on the lamb and finishing the dish with the balsamic sauce, some extra virgin olive oil and, last but not least, Sicilian sea salt flavored with black olives.

ListServ

The WLS has a Yahoo! listserv that is maintained by Candi Peeples.  To join: (1) send an email to bba_women-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (That’s bba “underscore” women “dash” subscribe @ yahoogroups.com); (2) when you receive an email back from Yahoo! asking you to confirm the fact that you want to be on the list serve, follow the directions in the email.  To post messages to the Section, send an e-mail to bba_women@yahoogroups.com.  Candi can be reached at 205-871-9550 or candi@shawanderson.com.  Online help can be found at the following link: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/

What are the options for reading group messages in email?  For each group you belong to, you have the option to control both the frequency of email message delivery and the format of messages:

Frequency Options

·                     Individual Emails
Messages are delivered one at a time to your email inbox. This is the best option if you want to keep up on the latest posts immediately. Email attachments, if included in a message and allowed by your moderator, will be sent directly to you.

·                     Daily Digest
Messages are delivered in batches of 25 or daily, whichever comes sooner. This is the best option if you want to receive fewer mail messages and don't need up-to-the minute posts in your inbox. Email attachments are not available in digests.

·                     Only Special Announcements
This means you will receive email messages only when the group moderator posts a "Special Announcement" message. This is a good option if you want to pass on day-to-day discussion for very busy groups but do want to receive important updates from the group moderator. Keep in mind that usage by each moderator will vary. (The moderator may choose to never use this feature, in which case you would never receive email messages, or may choose to use it frequently.)

·                     No Mail / Web Only
The best option to choose if you prefer to only read messages on the web. Also useful if you need to temporarily put message delivery on hold, for example while you are on vacation. However, keep in mind that (while rare) some groups do not enable the "message archive" feature and for these groups it is not possible to read messages on the web. It is a moderator decision on whether to enable the message archive feature.

Format Options

·                     Full Featured
Includes links giving you instant access to all group features (photos, calendar, profiles, polls, files, etc.), the ability to see all messages to a topic, and a "recent activity module" providing information on new activity in the group over the last seven days. Definitely the best choice for groups that use more than just the message features or groups where you want to take advantage of the message archive.

·                     Traditional
Emails are delivered "as is", without the addition of any links back to the group, except in the footer of the email. The right choice if your email client does not effective support the "Full Featured" format.

To set any of these options, go to the "Edit Membership" page of your group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GROUPNAME/join (where "GROUPNAME" is the name of your group). Message frequency options for groups can also be changes from the "Edit My Groups" page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups?o=2&edit=1   Additional help can be found at:  http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/messages/messages-01.html

Guidelines for posting messages

The Women Lawyers Section wants the list-serve to be an active tool, however it is recognized that too much irrelevant traffic will defeat the purpose of the list-serve.  The following are some guidelines to use in posting messages.  These guidelines are not intended to scare anyone from posting messages or other valuable information.  Rather, experiences with other list-serves suggest that guidelines will keep our list-serve running smoothly and effectively.

The following types of messages are NOT appropriate.

1) Marketing by list members or others.

2) Political announcements or petitions.

3) Political solicitation, including campaign materials.

4) Any other message not directly related to or of particular interest to section members .  This category includes jokes (even funny ones), warnings about internet scams and viruses and chain messages.

5) Any kind of inflammatory, discriminatory or personal attacks.

Thank you for adhering to these guidelines!
